Personally I have researched the Plant Based diet and have found it is very good for kidney patients along with heart patients also. The Mediterranean diet is also good. It really all depends on what your blood work is telling you. If in your blood work you see that your potassium is high then you need to stay away from food that is high in potassium and only consume low potassium food. The same with your phosphorous levels if they are high reduce your phosphorous intake with your foods/drinks or if they are low you need to eat more foods that are higher in phosphorus. If you are anemic then you need to look at veggies that have some iron in them. With Plant Based you can also have a meal here and there with animal protein like boneless skinless chicken breast (3oz) or wild caught salmon (3oz). The renal dietitians say that red meat, beef, pork, game like venison, are the meats you need to stay away from as they are harder on your kidneys. I only eat meat twice a week one meal each time. I get my protein from tofu, tempeh, edamame, quinoa, lentils, nuts, and other veggies. There are several certified renal dietitians on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. They have wonderful recipes they share. If you want to track what you eat and know how much of everything is in something you eat please download the free app called Cronometer. Please always consult your doctor when doing anything. Your doctor would also be the one to give you a referral to a certified renal dietitian if you decide to go that route. Good luck and hope you can find some good healthy recipes to try. Keep fighting on! Cindy (Team Member)
