Recovery rates from postrenal failure?

I am almost four months out from postrenal failure from urethra blockage. I am 9 weeks out from green light resection of the prostate and peeing much, much better.

When I was admitted due to severe restless leg and vomiting in the middle of September, my kidney numbers were: 10.4 creatinine, 10 eGFR, and 70 BUN. Now I am 3.1/20.4/56 and feel pretty good with just some residual dizziness.

I am in a very rural area with limited access to good nephros, and my daughter, who is an MSN, RN in a more populated area has been pushing REAL hard for me to consider dialysis. I am resisting equally hard, so far, becuase my trend is so good, and seems even to have accelerated now.

I am going to have to deal with my localized prostate cancer next, and soon, but I do NOT want to do anything with PCa treatments that will set back my kidneys.

I am looking without success for any information on typical recovery rates for people who've had potrenal failure of my severity level, and whether or not it is wise to continue waiting on stenting or temporary dialysis.

Thanks in advance for any input.

  1. Hello , Thanks for sharing so much of your journey with us. It seems like you are handling it very well. My youngest son is stage 5 and does at-home dialysis. He still works everyday. He has been doing this for over a year.

My father got prostate cancer, throat cancer, and chronic kidney disease within a short period of each other. He started down this road when he was 72. He will be 90 next month. He is stage 4, but not on dialysis. He did the PC surgery first, then surgery for throat cancer after that. At the time they put him on medication for CKD.

I know everyone is different. This is what he did. Today, he is doing very well. He walks every day. He was not a water drinker before this, but he does now. Please let us know how you are doing and if you find any more information. Sorry, I couldn't be of more help.

Have you spoken to your healthcare team about this and see what they have to say on the subject? Thanks for sharing. Diane (Team Member)
