When is it time to see a nephrologist?

I am turning 75 and have been monitoring my comprehensive metabolic panel for some time. My most recent GFR was 48, which I understand indicates that I have mild-moderate CKD. Do you feel it’s time for me to book an appointment with a nephrologist?

  1. Hi sorry to here that and I can really sympathise with you as I have CKD myself.. my advice to you would be to book an appointment with your Nephrologist just to see where your options are and how they can help you going forward, please let us know how you get on Khiry (Team Member)

    1. I’ve been watching my GFR for many years, probably more than a decade now. A year ago, my GFR dropped 10 points in a 3 month period. My endocrinologist (for type 2 diabetes) sent me directly to a nephrologist. I am at the level where I can turn it around with proper nutrition, fluids & care. The toughest thing for me is I have multiple chronic illnesses, plus mental health issues. I take many medications. My nephrologist is very helpful and wonderful to talk with. It’s funny, we have the same birthday! Same year and everything 😆 I’m happy I was sent to her. She had my vitamin D and parathyroid checked. My vitamin D levels haven’t come up to normal after 8 months of supplements! And I have hyperparathyroid, but normal calcium and potassium levels. I’m weird! I go for more bloodwork in a couple months, after taking the higher doses of vitamin D. It’s good to keep an eye on your GFR, but also to see a nephrologist when your numbers begin to drop rather than waiting until they are too low & unable to reverse.
