Newly diagnosed and need advice

I was diagnosed CKD in November 2023. Nephrologist did not say what level. In November I was 59 gfr and 1.3 creatinine. Yesterday I was 50 gfr and creatinine was 1.40. I’m scared to death and feel like things are spinning out of control. Up until a year ago my creatinine was generally about 1.0. I have been following a kidney patient diet I feel. Mostly plant based, no dairy, low potassium, no added salt and low sodium, increased my water intake to between 40-60 ounces of good clean reverse osmosis filtered water. What can I do to reverse this trend and what am I doing wrong? I don’t mind telling you I’m scared about the direction things are going. I feel like I’m on a roller coaster. Thanks for any help you can be.

  1. Hi , thank you for your question. Has your doctor been helpful at all in giving advice on what to do to slow or stop the progression of your CKD? It seems like you're on the right track. Have you considered exploring working with a renal dietitian? Some people in the community have found them to be a helpful resource when it comes to managing their diet with CKD since it is often confusing. In the meantime, you may be interested in some of these resources: https://chronic-kidney-disease.net/lifestyle-changes, https://chronic-kidney-disease.net/treatment, & https://chronic-kidney-disease.net/diet. I think a lot of others can relate to CKD being like on a rollercoaster. Please know the community is here for you if you ever need to vent - it is scary, but you don't have to do things alone.
