My New Experience with Chronic Kidney Disease

If you knew me, you would have quickly realized my passion for adventure and seeking new things. Even at age 65, I live my life to the fullest. I loved traveling, writing, and interacting with people. And of course – talking!

I didn’t realize how my body was changing until my diagnosis. I remember noticing a few changes and some unusual symptoms. There were days I was fatigued and was getting frequent headaches. My energy levels seemed to dwindle. I noticed these changes on the trips I was taking. Worried about my health, I decided to get my yearly checkup before it was time. I needed medical advice. Don’t want to scare anybody, but you should probably get yourself checked if you notice one or two of these symptoms.

Getting my CKD diagnosis

After a series of medical tests and consultations with a specialist, the doctor revealed the unexpected news. I had been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD). It was a life-altering revelation, and initially, I felt overwhelmed by this news.

It was explained to me that CKD is a condition where the kidneys gradually lose their ability to filter waste products. Hearing this, I couldn't help but wonder how this would affect my love for travel and the freedom I cherished, I loved my adventurous life.

Despite the initial shock, I was determined not to let this define my journey. With the support of my family and friends, I have just started a new chapter in life. Embracing the challenges that lie ahead. I haven’t seen a kidney doctor yet, but I made an appointment. My doctor outlined a treatment plan, which included lifestyle changes.

Taking charge of my health

I decided to take charge of my health and make necessary adjustments to my lifestyle. Of course, diet is the first thing to change. I adopted a kidney-friendly diet, which is low in sodium, phosphorus, and potassium. You know fruit and veggies were added.

I loved soft drinks, so cutting back was a challenge. Had to add in lots of water, putting an app on my phone reminds me. Following my doctor's advice, I take my prescribed medications to control my blood pressure. And manage other conditions that might impact my kidneys.

I had to learn to travel smartly and adapt to my new travel routines. Now I have to make sure I have access to kidney-friendly food options and drinking water while on trips.

Finding joy

This will require patience and self-compassion. Child, I discovered a newfound appreciation for life's simple joys. No longer sweat the small stuff. Life is too short. I have even started writing about my CKD journey, using my social media platform to raise awareness about my kidney health and inspire others facing similar challenges.

My determination will shine through. As my adventures continued, even with CKD, I can still experience the beauty of the world in a different light. Through every trial I have had in life, I believe my story becomes a testament. I need to adapt, overcome, and find joy in life's uncertainties.

Each day that I lived, I embarked on each new day with hope and courage, embracing the journey with CKD and reminding myself that I am more than my condition(s). We are all in this together.
