I Can't See A Nephrologist Until Stage 3B

This is not me personally, but I had someone tell me that this is what their doctor told them. They were told that one of the Kidney Foundations recommended this. Am I missing something here?

Maybe this is why so many people aren't told they have CKD until they are stage 3. Shouldn't we see a nephrologist as soon as possible to understand what is causing our kidneys to decline?

Has anyone ever heard this information before? What are your thoughts on this? We would like to hear from you. Diane (Team Member)

  1. At what stage do you reach out to see a nephrologist? We are all getting different answers. We would like to hear from you. Diane (Team Member)

    1. I am not happy that I wasn't told I had a kidney problem until I was stage 3B.

      1. I completely agree with you! Same happened to me. My PCP told me my labs results says my Kidney function is lower. She tested me again after I stopped a drug. Test improved. I asked what Should I be doing now to help this? She said .. nothing to do, I found what was causing it, you stay off that drug and you will be fine. My Dr of 12 years told me this lie, after refusing my request for blood tests to make sure I was ok Prior to be told this. Was never told it was a disease. A Pharmacist told me years before when I started this drug, that I need to be diligent about blood testing regularly. I am feeling so let down by the Drs in this town.
Sorry for going into so much!

      2. It can be so stressful and we can get so disappointed I know. I'm sorry this happened to you and your doctor did not schedule follow up care for you. I hope your kidneys have rebounded and you have gotten some good advice regarding a healthy kidney diet to help your injured kidneys to heal some. Have you been diagnosed with an acute kidney injury or are they saying you have CKD? Have they done a biopsy or a genetic test to find out? I can tell you a good certified renal dietitian can help you and your kidney disease. Let us know how you are progressing and If you found a new doctor or are staying with this one you've had for 12 years. Keep up the fight warrior. Cindy (Team Member)

    2. My GFR was a steady 60 for years. The test form says >60 is ok, so I thought this was a normal reading. I suffered from migraines for years and before I took Imitrex I relied on aspirin. I would take as many as 6 Excedrin in 24 hours for days on end. My PCP of 20+ years knew this but never warned me about the dangers of aspirin. I could have avoided CKD completely if I had known! Yes, I'm not happy about this.
