Diet and Nutrition

Do people with kidney disease need to eat a strict plant based diet?

  1. , this is an excellent question. We are all so different. Have you had a chance to talk to your doctor about this? I was told to cut out salt and drink lots of water. If you get a chance to speak to your doctor, let us know what he has to say. Are you thinking about doing a plant-based diet? We would like to hear more from you. Diane (Team Member)

    1. Yes I am trying to stay on a plant based diet. It is really difficult. It seems with kidney disease there are more foods you can’t than we can eat.

      1. Hello. I commend you on working to slow the progression of this disease. I know it can be difficult and hard trying to stick to a safe diet for your kidneys but in the end it’s worth it. Big things are the sodium reduction, drinking enough water to hydrate your kidneys and heart, and staying away from processed foods and fast foods. These have so much sodium and chemicals that are just bad for us. I think back to the Garden of Eden and all they had was a beautiful bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Animals weren’t even considered for food. There has to be something good in that. So I’ve committed to a plant based diet but, I do have animal protein 3 times a week. I am anemic, which is a problem I’ve had since childhood! I eat organic boneless skinless chicken breast and wild caught salmon for my animal protein. I use tofu, edamame, beans, legumes, nuts, lentils, quinoa, brown rice and other vegetables for my plant protein. Keep up the good work you are doing. Your kidneys will thank you for giving them a break because, animal protein is harder on them and we want them to have it easier. Thank you for your question we are here to help if we can. Keep fighting the good fight. 💚 Cindy (Team Member)
