"I was diagnosed years ago with CKD because of my GFR number. Can’t remember what stage. I was prescribed allopurinol because I was borderline line in my uric acid. Was on it for years, but noticed skin was dry, so new doc took me off for 6 months. Had lab work done, showed high calcium, high uric acid, and gfr was off as usual. I’m back on allopurinol, was told to drink plenty of water and get rechecked in a week. He asked if I take calcium supplements, I don’t. But when I got home, I realized that I’ve been taking a lot of extra strength tums… Each Extra Strength Tums (Drug Mart brand) tablet contains 300 mg of elemental calcium and 750 mg of calcium carbonate, so I’m hoping this is why my calcium was high. I read it can affect uric acid levels, so I hope by drinking a lot of water and back on allopurinol with lower both and help my gfr. I’m high anxiety so I worry a lot about this being severe. Thanks, anyone else experiencing this?"

  1. I was on allopurinol for a while when I has my blood cancer. I remember they also told me to drink a lot of water. I felt like a camel there for a few weeks. I think, though, as long as you keep up with your physician, they should be able to tell you what the test results mean and if they are concerned or not. Hopefully they aren't. Either way, though, just know you are not alone! Keep on keepin' on, DPM
