Having Bone Fragility Along With Chronic Kidney Disease

Back in the day, they said that chronic kidney disease was found in older age people who just have old kidneys. As for me, I’m a chronic kidney patient myself. I have several chronic illnesses, so this didn’t come as a surprise to get another one. Of course, it's shocking and depressing, but we will find a way to bounce back. Who wants to live with any disease, let alone several of them?

Taking care of my bone health

Living with CKD myself, I first discovered that I had bone fragility or osteoporosis in medical terms. My bones have become fragile. It could be dues to different reasons for some, or it could be the medications causing it. There is no way to know, but I do know that my kidneys are becoming weak, and as we already know that our body works in complicated ways.

My healthcare team told me I had bone fragility before my CKD diagnosis. I did make an appointment with my healthcare team to find out what suggestions they had to avoid further risk. So when I consulted both, I found valuable and effective options to consider for my diet and to avoid the risk of any further damage.

Vitamin D is good for our bones and as you already know the sun is a natural vitamin D. So I suggest taking a walk in the sunshine helps a lot. As for other nutrients, calcium is what makes our bones strong. Taking calcium tablets or calcium through food is always good. Other than these things, phosphorous can be consumed in low amounts, compared to vitamin D and calcium.

I am also learning that drinking carbonated drinks, alcohol, and canned food must be avoided. Avoid salt in your food, try to find some sort of alternative. Used herbs, that don’t have sodium in them.

Learning more about these conditions

I am getting so much different information about the conflict between osteoporosis and CKD. If you have eggs for breakfast, or chicken and meat for lunch and dinner you need to change it. Too much protein can affect the kidneys, but protein is good for the bones. It’s best to keep a chart of what you are eating and consult a dietician. Other than all the above things that I mentioned, avoiding the bone fragility risk for CKD patients is also possible when you do light exercise instead of forcing your body to exert weight on the bones.

Other than all the above-mentioned things, avoid the bone fragility risk for CKD patients. You can add in a little bit of light weight lifting and light relaxing exercises. These are good for you if you are a chronic kidney disease patient.

If you smoke, try and give that up. I was a habitual smoker for years. Gave it up 27 years ago. It’s not easy to quit, but not impossible either. One thing that I have learned about myself in these last 65 years on this earth is that I want to live a long healthy life. I had to learn to train my mind and work hard on my body. Before making any changes, be sure to consult your doctor first. We can do this.
