Exploring Other Approaches to Traditional Medicine

My doctor just diagnosed me with stage 3A chronic kidney disease (CKD). I haven’t had the strength to look that up yet, but decided that I could look for alternative therapies now and find out the benefits and the challenges.

I know that medical treatments can be challenging to manage, but we have to seek them out. While there is limited evidence to support the effectiveness of alternative therapies for CKD, in speaking with my doctor, she said that some patients have found relief from the use of complementary approaches.

I have looked into various alternative therapies and different approaches to traditional medicine in order to manage any symptoms and improve my overall well-being. Right now, I am okay, not having any symptoms that I know of. My doctor said that these therapies have included acupuncture, massage therapy, herbal supplements, and dietary changes.

Looking into other approaches for treatment

From my research, I have found some of these therapies to be beneficial in managing CKD. It's important to note that they should be used in conjunction with traditional medical treatment and under the care of your healthcare team. It is important to be aware of side effects associated with alternative therapies, as they may interact with medication or worsen certain medical conditions.

Some of the most used alternative therapies for CKD include acupuncture, massage therapy, meditation, and herbal remedies. Acupuncture involves the insertion of small needles into specific points on the body to promote healing and reduce pain. Massage therapy can help muscle tension and promote relaxation. Meditation can help manage stress and anxiety, which is very common among us. I am there right now.

Some others have stated that acupuncture is particularly helpful in managing other pain and fatigue with other illnesses. I have heard many say that massage therapy is beneficial in reducing stress and promoting relaxation. This treatment was very painful for me. But do what you can to help improve your overall well-being.

Contact your healthcare team

I want to say this again, contact your healthcare team before starting anything new. Some people find relief from alternative therapies. There are herbs and supplements that can interact with prescription medications and may cause side effects.

In addition to these therapies, you can make dietary changes, including increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables and reducing your intake of processed foods and sodium. I have also incorporated certain herbs and supplements, such as turmeric and omega-3 fatty acids, into my diet to promote kidney health.

Again discuss alternative therapies with a healthcare provider. It is important for CKD patients to maintain an open line of communication with their care team. This can include doctors, nurses, dietitians, and social workers, who can provide guidance and support throughout the treatment process.

Build a support network

Building a support network of family and friends can also be beneficial for CKD patients. Supportive relationships can help reduce stress and anxiety and provide a sense of community during a challenging time.

While alternative therapies are not a substitute for traditional medical treatments, they can be a valuable addition to our CKD management plan. It is important to approach these with caution.  As I stated in the beginning. I was just diagnosed and want to explore all my options.
